“a good game design is always easy to get into and harder to master” - Jacky Ke Jiang
this quote from Jiang is a sentiment shared by a lot of game designers, including myself, but I think this quote is interpreted wrongly to mean "The best games have a low skill floor and a highskill ceiling." According to Masahiro Sakurai, this interpretation is what inspired the early Kirby games. It's a valid way to interpret it, but having a game be simple to understand at first glance isn't the only way to make it easy to get into, and complicated games can be easy to get into under the right circumstances. Complicated games are especially easy to getinto when there is a social reason to do so.
For examples of both these interpretations, we can look at the two best-selling games; Tetris and Minecraft. Tetris is a very simple game to understand, but has a huge skill ceiling where the best players are still getting better to this day. Minecraft is a very complex game to play, and has lots of rules and systems working together. However, it's a very fun game to play with others who can help you get the hang of it. It also has lots of different ways to play, between all the different modes,player-made maps/minigames/mods, and the intricate systems like enchantments, potion brewing, and redstone. It's a very complicated game that is made easy to get into because of the community that formed around it
